After a great night's sleep, we went upstairs and I cooked eggs for everyone. Then we headed down the mountain to visit a couple of waterfalls in the Simmetal valley.
A picture like this doesn't show the proper scale of how big the waterfall is...
...this one gives you a better idea. That's Alex at the bottom hiking closer and getting drenched by mist.
We had one anxious moment. The river is extremely fast moving and rocky. Dangerous. Not the kind of river you'd wade across, even if it wasn't ice cold. Their Labrador retriever, Polo, will fetch a stick by any means necessary, and Robin threw his stick into the river. Polo jumped in after it, and was immediately swept downstream. It was scary. Stefan dropped his stuff and ran down the path to help him. About 50 meters downstream, Polo found a place to exit the whitewater. He was intact. And he had the stick.
Near the second waterfall, we stopped at a restaurant and had a coffee. The kids were a little hungry, so Stefan bought some plates of French fries and roast beef. And ice cream. Anything dairy in Switzerland is amazing. The ice cream Cristina got had meringues and whipped cream.
Alex, Bella, and Robin played soccer with a couple of other boys
Alex wanted to play soccer rather than hike up to the waterfall, so Stefan and Polo joined the four of us on the hike.
For dinner, Stefan and Karin treated us to a traditional cheese fondue. They told us that the cheese can be heavy in the stomach if you're not used to it, and one way to aid digestion is to drink hot tea with the meal. The worst thing to drink with cheese fondue is cold soda. Another digestive aid is a bit of cherry schnapps called Kirsch. So we followed their advice, enjoyed the fondue, and had no tummy troubles afterward. Even Cristina, who is a bit lactose-intolerant.
