A Day with the Sheridans

For those who don’t know, we met Jennifer and Bill Sheridan, and their daughter Callista, when they lived in Phoenix. Sofia and Callista were in the same class at Desert Marigold. When Bill retired, they decided to move to Costa Rica. I believe they’ve been here nearly 3 and a half years now. They love Costa Rica. It’s fun to have friends with a Phoenix-connection to visit when we come down.

The Sheridans' tranquil back porch

I woke up at 7, and showered gringo-style (i.e. not a suicide-shower). The kids were outside with Jen, no doubt looking at birds. She’s become quite the bird watcher since moving to Costa Rica.

Jennifer and Bill cooked up a lovely breakfast of scrambled eggs, potatoes, toast, and fruit. The morning consisted of the kids playing outside, and getting nice and muddy, and the adults talking.

Jen and Bill showed us the details of their house, which they purchased as a fixer-upper. It’s like a new house now, and gorgeous. They showed us pictures of it before the renovations. It’s a huge difference. The ceilings have been raised to give the house a more roomy feel. And at 6’3”, I can totally appreciate that. The pictures showed how incredibly low the ceilings had been. In one room, the ceiling was about 6 feet high. They also put a completely new roof on the house, with sky lights. In many rooms, you don’t even need an electric light.

In the afternoon, the kids watched a movie. For lunch we had gringo-style tacos (like our burrito bar at home). The kids played more, building tiny plastic Bimbo tractor-trailers that come as prizes in loaves of bread.

We didn’t want to be driving too much after dark, so we took some group shots with the Sheridans and their beautiful view, said our goodbyes, and left around 5. Thank you Bill and Jennifer for a nice visit!

The view from the front of their house (although luckily they don't always see a bunch of people standing there smiling...that'd be kind of freaky)

At home in Pavas, we made soup for the kids. I cut the pesto bread that I’d bought a few days ago and grilled the slices in a pan. As I was eating my 3rd or 4th piece, I noticed a dark spot on the bottom of my slice. I picked up the rest of the loaf and saw that it had a streak of furry green mold running down the length of the loaf. What a shame! It was really good bread. I couldn’t bear to pitch the whole thing, so I cut off the bottom layer of the bread and we ate the rest.

After the kids were in bed, Wito got home and bought tacos from across the street. Cristina and I ate tacos with Wito and Maritza and chatted.

We retired to our room. I uploaded several days worth of journals and pictures while Cristina unpacked from our Grecia-San Ramon trip. A telenovella on TV ended the night with a little guilty trashiness.

Nicely choreographed pic, you got the heights in ascending / descending order just right!
