A lazy morning. Miranda and Sophia came over for the Pavas farmer’s market. We finally walked through the market around noon and bought some fruit and vegetables. The original plan to spend this weekend camping at the San Gerardo fish camp was nixed because everyone’s running a little short on cash. We’ll just go for the day on Sunday.
Miranda said we could use the Blue Bomber if we wanted to go do something. She was just going to nap Sophia and unpack. So we drove them home and then had the Blue Bomber at our disposal.
We still needed to visit Lida, so Cristina arranged it. We left around 3 pm but had not accounted for the fact that part of the pista was closed for bridge repair. Traffic at the place where the detour began was gridlocked. We went 30 feet in about 30 minutes. Finally we gave up and headed back home.
We had the car and didn’t want to waste the chance to do something, so we drove to the Sabana park. They have miniature ponies there on the weekends for rides. I wasn’t sure exactly where to park, and I accidentally took the wrong road, which put us on the highway. So we had to drive a ways before the next exit. There’s a big store here called EPA, which is like a Home Depot. The EPA was near the exit we got off on, so we took the opportunity to look for a dish rack we’d seen at the cabin at Arenal. It’s a big double decker, very well-designed and impressive. We were considering getting one for ourselves as well as Maritza, whose dish rack is a bit undersized. But we don’t know where to find them. Thought we’d check EPA. They didn’t have it.
We finally made it to the park, just as they were packing up the horses. But Bella got to pet a few of them. A couple of young ones munched grass near their mamas. One even started nursing.
It started to sprinkle, so we loaded up and headed home. We checked one more place that we thought might have the dish rack, but no luck. We grabbed some groceries from Mas X Menos and went home and made pasta with spinach marinara. Okay, it was a can of Hunt’s spaghetti sauce, but it’s the only sauce I’ve found here that has no sugar. I did add fresh organic spinach to it. Bundles of organic spinach were only 255 colones (50 cents!).
Wito wanted me to watch his copy of the Gators National Championship game against Oklahoma. He had no choice but to watch it here with ESPN’s Spanish-speaking commentators dubbed over the real Fox commentators. And they drove him nuts with their blatant disinterest and lack of knowledge about the Gators. He watches it every once in a while and gets furious at the commentators every time. So he wanted to show me what he was talking about. Kind of the same phenomenon as tasting something that’s spoiled and then asking someone else to taste it to concur how bad it is. So I watched the whole game, though I couldn’t understand enough of their Spanish to totally get what he meant. But it was nice to see the game again, bad commentators and all. I hadn’t watched it since the actual live game.
